Sharmain and Steve: Meet the married couple leading with compassion in aged care

At St Agnes’ Catholic Parish, we’re proud to have passionate people who live and breathe the values of care, respect, and community. Among them are Sharmain and Steve Peterson — a married couple whose dedication and energy bring a special warmth to our aged care services.

Both serve as Residential Services Leads: Sharmain at Emmaus Home, and Steve overseeing our St Agnes’ sites including St Agnes’ House, Maryknoll, and Mount Carmel. Together, they exemplify what it means to truly care for others.

“Our message to residents is simple: you are our family. We see you, hear you, and you matter deeply. You’re the reason we come to work every day.”

A lifelong commitment to aged care

Sharmain’s journey began at just 17 years old in Wagga Wagga, where she discovered her passion for residential aged care. Since joining St Agnes’ in 2009, she has progressed from hospitality to leadership, completing qualifications in dementia care and leadership along the way.

Steve’s path to aged care took a different route. From mechanic and truck driver to volunteer at St Agnes’ House, he found his calling through connection with residents. His 16 years in aged care have deepened his appreciation for the meaningful relationships formed within the community.

What inspires their work every day?

For Sharmain, it’s the joy of connection and creativity. Whether it’s redecorating a dining room or celebrating the seasons with residents, she loves empowering others to dream and contribute.

Steve treasures the relationships, especially with residents who may not have family nearby. Listening to their stories and supporting families through difficult times is what makes his role fulfilling.

The challenges they face

Both acknowledge the emotional weight of their work. Sharmain finds the loss of long-term residents hard to navigate, while Steve reflects on the challenges of supporting grieving families.

A unique partnership

Working in the same industry and sharing the same passion creates a supportive partnership. Though they keep work and home life separate, they understand each other’s challenges and often collaborate on creative projects, like the beloved crochet-covered Christmas tree that brings the community together.

The power of relationships

Their leadership is grounded in genuine connections with residents, staff, and families. Sharmain’s experience working across roles helps her empathise with staff challenges and encourages their growth. Steve emphasises the importance of a positive work environment where everyone feels supported.

A philosophy on ageing

Both Sharmain and Steve view ageing as a journey of growth, learning, and gratitude. Sharmain encourages keeping the brain active and never stopping learning. Steve sees growing old as a privilege — a reminder to live life fully and cherish time.
