In 2025, 20 local Aboriginal people aged 12 to 16 participated in technology-free camps led by the St Agnes’ Family, Children and Youth Pathways team, supported through the NSW Government’s Holiday Break program, administered by the Department of Regional NSW.
The camps welcomed the students to Knorrit Flat Riverside Camp, west of Taree, where they participated in a rich mix of cultural, recreational, and social activities. By leaving their mobile phones behind, participants were able to immerse themselves in the experience, exploring bush walks, swimming, Aboriginal painting, volleyball, soccer, touch football and even a trip to Potoroo Falls, all while learning practical camp skills and deepening connections with mentors and each other.
Family Support Team Leader Stacey Carney said, “These camps, initially run as a trial for students in our Family Support Network groups in Wauchope, give young people more than activities… they create opportunities to connect with peers, immerse themselves in nature, and engage with culture in a meaningful way. Seeing their confidence and relationships grow is inspiring.”
Thanks to overwhelmingly positive feedback, St Agnes’ has secured additional funding from the NSW Department of Communities and Justice under the Community and Family Support program, allowing the camps to continue in 2026 and give even more young people the chance to learn, connect, and grow.
The Family, Children and Youth Pathways team at St Agnes' Care and Lifestyle supports families and young people across the Hastings community. Through programs like Homework Club and Playgroup, home visits, group activities, and the St Agnes’ Community Centre on Horton Street, the team empowers families to strengthen their relationships, build resilience, and foster a sense of belonging.
