Thirteen plumbing apprentices graduate in first JHI cohort
The mid north coast can celebrate the graduation of thirteen fully qualified plumbers thanks to the John Henry Institute (JHI) plumbing apprentices’ training program.
At a ceremony for the 2024 graduating students at John Henry Institute (JHI), held on Tuesday 20 November at St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Hall in Port Macquarie, the first group of JHI plumbing apprentices were recognised for successfully completing the nationally recognised Certificate III in Plumbing (CPC32420) delivered by JHI.
JHI has significant experience in providing quality vocational education and training, that is compliant with the Australian Qualifications Framework (ASQA). It is the only provider of plumbing training for apprentices between Coffs Harbour and Newcastle.
JHI has a strong working partnership with Newman Senior Technical College, using their facilities and workshops for practical training, which facilitated the successful delivery of this plumbing qualification.
Natasha Murphy, JHI Manager, acknowledged the support of internal colleagues, external partners and industry associates such at Steve Ryke from MEGT in ensuring a positive learning experience for all students.
“There is a lot of work happening behind the scenes to ensure our students are engaged in an inclusive and motivating learning environment, so we appreciate the collaborative effort and commitment of all involved in helping them achieve success,’ said Natasha.
‘I am incredibly proud of our very first cohort of graduates in Plumbing. Each graduate is to be commended for their dedication to learning. It has been an amazing achievement to get through the 58 units required to successfully complete this qualification,” said Natasha.
Plumbing trainer, Travers Goldie said the graduation ceremony was the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and perseverance, having watched his students grow in confidence and skill over the last three years.
“You have chosen a professional that is as old as civilization itself, yet more essential than ever. As graduating students are the unassuming champions that make modern life possible,” Travers told his graduates.
“You have spent countless hours on the job, in the classroom mastering everything from digging trenches to changing washers to understanding codes and safety regulations.”
“You have learned to troubleshoot complex systems, to think critically and to approach each challenge with a problem-solving mindset.”
“Today is a celebration of all you have accomplished but remember it is not just the certificate you’ve earned that defines you… the skills you have acquired are not just tools for fixing pipes, it
is the work ethic, the character, and the pride you take in your craft that will carry you far,” said Travers.
“You have earned this moment, and I have no doubt you will continue to achieve great things in years to come. Congratulations!”.
“You now carry the responsibility to ensuring that the craft remains a source of pride for you and for the profession – you are the future of the industry and with your knowledge and skills I know the future is in good hands,” he concluded.
In the graduate address, Lachlan Sobkowski spoke on behalf of the Certificate III Plumbing graduates, sharing the story of his pathway to becoming a qualified plumber.
“My plumbing career started back in June of 2021 while I was in Year 10 at school. I got an opportunity to do work experience with Castleton Plumbing. A week into my work experience I knew I wanted to pursue a career in plumbing and was lucky enough to be offered an apprenticeship that would start after my Year 10 exams. I gained a great deal of experience and knowledge from my dad who is a plumber and from all the tradespeople I have worked with and from Travers Goldie, who has been our teacher over the past 3 years.
“I want to thank St Agnes’ Catholic Parish, JHI, Travis and my boss Dave at Castleton Plumbing, for the opportunity and training to become a qualified plumber,” he added.
Graduates received their certificates from Tony Leahy, CEO of JHI and St Agnes’ Catholic Parish. After the ceremony they enjoyed afternoon tea with the family, friends, JHI staff and Parish leaders who attended.
