NSW Government Inquiry hears about Parish’s best practice PALM program

Domus 8.7* and Australian Catholic Anti-Slavery Network (ACAN)** representatives gave evidence in early June to the NSW Parliament’s Modern Slavery Committee hearing as part of its inquiry into modern slavery risks faced by temporary migrant workers in rural and regional New South Wales.

Natasha Murphy, Manager Learning and Development representing St Agnes’ Catholic Parish of the Diocese of Lismore (pictured bottom right), shared the Parish’s best practice model for employing aged-care workers on the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme.

The Domus 8.7 and ACAN submission has made key recommendations to the inquiry including a NSW labour hire licensing scheme, training and funding for frontline professionals to identify and support of modern slavery, and better management of modern slavery risk in NSW public sector procurement.

*Domus 8.7 is an agency of the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney that provides advice, remediation and prevention services in response to modern slavery.

**Members of ACAN (of which the Diocese of Lismore Catholic Schools is one) are united in the belief that action against modern slavery is fundamental Catholic Social Teaching.
