A Steady Hand and a Compassionate Heart: Mick Gilmour’s Work at the Community Hub

As Youth & Community Hub Manager, Mick Gilmour is not only a welcoming presence—he’s a lifeline for many who walk through the Hub’s doors.

With a background that includes 24 years in the NSW Police Force, 20 of those as a detective, and over 13 years managing the Hub, Mick brings a unique blend of experience, empathy, and calm to his role. His ability to de-escalate challenging situations and build trust with vulnerable individuals is a cornerstone of the Hub’s success.

Whether someone comes in for a cuppa, a shower, or to do their laundry, Mick is there—offering support, listening without judgment, and connecting people to the services they need. He works closely with local organisations and has helped foster strong partnerships across Port Macquarie, ensuring that those in need receive holistic and coordinated care.

“Port Macquarie is a funny town,” Mick says. “Homelessness isn’t always visible like in capital cities, but it’s here—and it’s real. It comes from all sorts of circumstances, and sometimes, it’s just really bad luck.”

Mick has seen firsthand how youth homelessness often hides in plain sight—through couch surfing, domestic violence, or trauma. During COVID, he noticed a shift, with more young adults aged 19–25 seeking help. The Hub responded with care packages and outreach, staying connected even when the centre couldn’t operate as usual.

“The most important thing for us is providing dignity,” Mick explains. “A shower, clean clothes—these are simple things, but they mean everything to someone doing it tough.”

Mick’s work is deeply personal. He’s built long-term relationships with many young people, watching them grow, find stability, and return years later with stories of jobs, homes, and families.

“You can’t put a value on that,” he says. “It’s incredibly rewarding.”

The Hub’s evolution—from a youth centre to a vital support space for the homeless—was made possible by the vision of the late Fr Leo Donnelly, who saw the need and invested in the community. Today, thanks to the St Agnes’ Foundation and its generous donors, the Hub continues to offer food, showers, laundry, and referrals—meeting people where they are and walking alongside them.

Outside of work, Mick stays grounded through fitness, family, and community sport, including coaching rugby league.

“It’s an extension of my work life,” he says. “It keeps me happy and connected.”

Mick’s story is a powerful reminder that compassion, consistency, and community can change lives. His work embodies the Parish’s mission to serve those in need—and we are proud to have him leading the way.
