Gospel retreat offers precious chance to meet Jesus at the well
An enthusiastic group of 35 participants attended the ‘Returning to the Simplicity of the Gospel’ retreat on Saturday 11 October at The Francis Retreat in Bonny Hills.
The retreat was ably led by Deacon Shane Hyland and his wife Leanne, who are members of both St Agnes’ Catholic Parish and Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Wauchope and coordinators for the Passionist Family Group Movement.
After a refreshing cuppa on arrival, the retreat began with prayer and song. Shane and Leanne then guided participants through several spiritual disciplines to help them experience the gospel in new and ever more meaningful ways. These disciplines included: Lectio Divina, Visio Divina, labyrinth, breathing meditation and mindful walking.
The scriptural passage chosen for the retreat was from John (4: 4-39) which told of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman at the well. Before embarking on an exploration of the text, Shane gave a glimpse into the historical and cultural context of the time in which it was written.
Throughout the day participants were able to try the different techniques, with ample time allowed afterwards for sharing personal responses in a small group setting.
The feedback from participants in the day was overwhelmingly positive. As one participant commented, ‘There was an excellent balance to the day with time to practice the spiritual discipline, time for quiet personal reflection, as well as time shared in group discussion.’
Another commented, ‘I am so glad I came; it was well worth the time.’
Special thanks to Joady and Peter Castles and all at The Francis Retreat for their kind hospitality and delicious food. It was lovely to be nourished body and soul in such a beautiful environment.
