“Learners Live Longer” l Village Voice

“Learners Live Longer” is the motto of the University of the Third Age (U3A). We are fortunate to have the Port Macquarie/Hastings Branch of U3A co-located on our St Agnes site at 2 Lochinvar Place, Port Macquarie.

U3A is a world-wide organisation in which retired people from all walks of life come together to learn from each other. U3A has over 800 members locally, and you must be a member to attend any of their courses. The course program for Term 3 has been finalised and can be viewed online at: www.pmhu3a.org.au
Locally, courses are run in Port Macquarie and at Laurieton and cover a diverse range of subjects.

There are more than 70 courses available, that include: astronomy, languages, computers, photography, arts, crafts and textiles, a writing group and history. Of course, learning is not only about the mind; there is something to keep you physically active too. Members regularly attend classes and join groups of like-minded people interested in international dance, meditation, croquet and cycling and specifically designed U3A exercise programs.

Social connections through the U3A community are another benefit. This is epitomised in its oldest and treasured member, George Wallens, who celebrated his 101st birthday in May, which was attended by the U3A community and Mayor Peta Pinson. George is a keen attendee of the Australian History course and certainly lives up to the U3A motto “Learners Live Longer”.

Many of our residents in St Agnes’ Village and Lourdes Villages, and others in the care of CCA, enjoy free membership of our local U3A. Class fees vary, but are at a minimal cost. The close proximity to our communities ensures ease of access to the courses and social activities available. For more information on term course lists, go to the U3A website or call the U3A office on (02) 6584 4192. Office hours are 9:30am – 3:30pm during term time.

It is just one of the many ways we bring together communities and lifestyle. To find out more about how we do this, call Sue Reid for a chat on 0407 843 515.
