Dr Sam’s joey ‘Kevin’ is star of the show at Maryknoll
Dr Sam Bouwer, who does rounds at Maryknoll, has been hand raising a wallaby joey abandoned by its mum. He is following advice of local wildlife rescue services so the 9 month-old joey can, eventually, be released back into the wild. He has been bringing the joey, dubbed ‘Kevin’ into CCA residential aged care facilities he visits, much to the delight of residents.
Freelance photographer, Nathan Edwards, heard about the joey’s visits with Dr Bouwer to Maryknoll and wanted to capture the story. In the past, Nathan worked for the Daily Telegraph and has had his photographs picked up by media internationally in US and the UK.
Dr Sam usually comes in on Wednesdays so on 4 December Nathan came along to meet ‘Kevin’ and some of the residents in person.
Residents Hilda Stevenson, 97, Norma Cowper, 92, and Chris Mitchell, 61 had a ball interacting with ‘Kevin’ while Nathan did the photoshoot.
The human subjects cooperated beautifully; great patience, however, was required for ‘Kevin’, whose naturally inquisitive nature meant he didn’t stay in one spot for too long.
Norma enjoyed the experience immensely, saying it reminded her of when she worked at Movietone. Hilda reckons she won’t be taking up modelling because there’s too much sitting around. And Chris, just took it all in his stride.
Colleen Banks, Heather Nicholson and the staff at Maryknoll were delighted to see the residents have so much fun thanks to Dr Sam and joey ‘Kevin’.
