A lifelong connection to St Agnes’ Catholic Parish

For Belinda Howell, being part of St Agnes’ Catholic Parish isn’t just a job – it’s a deep part of who she is. A proud Port Macquarie local, Belinda’s connection to the Parish began in early childhood when she attended St Joseph’s Preschool, the Parish’s first early education centre. Her journey continued through the Parish’s schools, starting with St Joseph’s Primary, and then moving on to Regional College for Years 7 to 10, and MacKillop College for Years 11 and 12.

Throughout her childhood, her father, Raymond Gaul, a dedicated parishioner, was actively involved in the community — a commitment that remains strong to this day. The same spirit of service extended to Belinda’s mum, Janice Gaul, who volunteered at St Joseph’s Primary School and within St Agnes’ Catholic Church. Their dedication to the Parish not only played a pivotal role in shaping Belinda’s own ties to the Parish but continues to inspire the next generation of her family.

Like Belinda, her father’s deep-rooted connection to the Parish began early. He attended St Joseph’s Convent School, which is now home to the Parish Administration Centre, and served as an altar boy at St Agnes’ Catholic Church. Raymond also helped chop wood for the nuns who lived on the Parish grounds. His enduring dedication has carried through generations, influencing Belinda and her family.

“It’s always been a constant and part of our family from my Nan down,” Belinda reflects. “My parents were always at Mass, always involved. Seeing that commitment growing up made the Parish feel like home.”

Her parent’s ties to the Parish were further solidified through the leadership of Fr. Donnelly. “Father Donnelly was such a significant figure in our lives,” Belinda recalls. “He was always present — at school, at Mass, in the community. He married my parents and baptised my sister and me. His commitment to helping others is something my family has always admired. What he did for the community is quite amazing, and his legacy lives on.”

Now, Belinda’s own family is following in her footsteps. Her stepdaughter is enrolled at Parish high school, MacKillop College, while her daughter, Millie, attends St Agnes’ Early Education Centre. Belinda made this decision with confidence, knowing firsthand the value of a Parish education and care.

“I always knew I wanted my daughter to have a Parish education. It’s something I trusted because I’d lived it myself,” Belinda says. “When we toured a couple of different early education centres, I remember walking into and saying, ‘This is my preferred centre because this is where I went, and I trust it.’”

Seeing Millie thrive at St Agnes’ has only reinforced Belinda’s decision.

“The educators genuinely care about the children, and Millie absolutely loves going each day,” she shares. “It gives me peace of mind knowing she’s in such nurturing hands, learning and growing in a place that meant so much to me as a child. The staff remember the little things, they address you by name, and knowing that they genuinely care makes all the difference. Having the St Agnes’ food services team prepare food for the children is also such a bonus — it’s one less thing to worry about as a busy parent, and I know she’s eating nutritious meals every day.”

Belinda’s confidence in the Parish’s services extends beyond education. When a role in the communications and marketing team became available, it felt like the perfect fit – an opportunity to contribute to the same community that had played such a significant role in her life.

“Joining the Parish team wasn’t something I ever planned, but once the opportunity came up, it felt right. I already believed in the values of the organisation and the care they provide — it made sense to be part of it.”

Today, Belinda works alongside a team of passionate professionals, helping to share the stories of the Parish’s many services and the positive impact they have on the community. Her role allows her to give back to the organisation that has been such an integral part of her life, while also helping others understand the value of belonging to a community that cares.

“Working with the Parish has been such a positive experience,” Belinda says. “The little things like wellbeing workshops and morning teas make you feel supported, not just as an employee but as a person. It’s the sense of community that really makes the difference.”

Belinda’s journey reflects how St Agnes’ Catholic Parish supports people not only in one chapter of their lives but across generations. Whether through education, employment, or community services, the Parish’s legacy of care continues to shape lives — past, present, and future.
