The 2024 ceremony for graduating students at John Henry Institute (JHI), held on Tuesday 20 November at St Agnes’ Catholic Parish Hall in Port Macquarie, marked the graduation of the first group of JHI plumbing apprentices, the second group of Ni-Vanuatu aged care workers, and more than 40 other students, who successfully completed nationally recognised qualifications through the John Henry Institute.

JHI has significant experience in providing quality vocational education and training, that is inclusive, equitable and compliant with the Australian Qualifications Framework (ASQA).

The 2024 Graduation included a culturally diverse group of 66 students who graduated with AQF Certificate III and IV qualifications including:

· Certificate III in Educational School Based Support

· Certificate III in Business

· Certificate III in Individual Support

· Certificate III in Engineering – Metal Fabrication (Apprenticeships)

· Certificate III in Plumbing (Apprenticeships)

· Certificate IV in Leadership and Management

Natasha Murphy, JHI Manager, acknowledged the support of external partners and industry associates such at Steve Ryke from MEGT and the professionalism of her fellow trainers Travers Goldie (Plumbing), Steve Reader (Metal Fabrication) and Sue Creech (Individual Support) in helping students achieve their goals.

“Vocational education and training plays a vital role in providing training for employment as well as supporting the dreams and aspirations of students, families and the community in general.

“Supporting students is a collaborative effort requiring strong commitment from internal colleagues, external partners and industry associates – we are honoured to share this special chapter in the lives of our graduates,” said Natasha.

Speaking directly to the graduates, Natasha commended them on their courage, hard work and dedication to learning.

“You have accomplished so much since starting your study with the John Henry Institute – I am confident the friendships, memories and lessons learned during your time with us will always be a part of your life-long learning journey” she said.

In the graduate address, Lachlan Sobkowski spoke on behalf of the Certificate III Plumbing graduates, the first cohort to graduate from JHI, sharing the story of his pathway to becoming a qualified plumber.

“I gained a great deal of experience and knowledge from my dad who is a plumber and from all the tradespeople I have worked with and from Travers Goldie, who has been our teacher over the past 3 years,” said Lachlan.

“I want to thank St Agnes’ Catholic Parish, JHI, Travis and my boss Dave at Castleton Plumbing, for the opportunity and training to become a qualified plumber,” he added.

Anne O’Brien, Deputy CEO of St Agnes Catholic Parish, in leading prayer, shared four key characteristics of St John Henry Newman after whom JHI is named, noting that he prioritised

education, fostered community, stood up for the truth and had equal concern for the head and the heart.

‘I pray that all here, especially our graduating students, continue to strive to live out these four key characteristics of St John Henry Newman in their own lives,’ said Anne.

Ken Ritchie, Executive Manager, People, St Agnes’ Catholic Parish said in the keynote speech that graduation ceremonies provide an opportunity for acknowledgement and reflection.

‘Today is an opportunity to acknowledge those who have helped you along the way but also to reflect and celebrate – don’t be afraid to congratulate yourself! As you move forward continue to develop yourself – never stop learning,’ said Ken.

Graduates received their certificates from Tony Leahy, CEO of JHI and St Agnes’ Catholic Parish. After the ceremony they enjoyed afternoon tea with the family, friends, JHI staff and Parish leaders who attended.
