Joyful celebrations for Vanuatu Independence Day spent far from home

Our team of 25 Ni-Vanuatu workers celebrated the most significant day for their nation, National Independence Day on 30 July far from their homeland and families.  For many of them this was the first time they had been away from home for this special day.

Parish leaders and staff got behind the day to help facilitate a day of joyous celebrations. A number of small events were held across various sites to ensure everyone in the Ni-Vanuatu team, whether they were rostered on or off for work, was able to celebrate in some way.

It was a day of gratitude and thankfulness, a celebration of Ni-Vanuatu culture through song, dance, food and friendship.

Everyone on the Ni-vanuatu team was so appreciative of the respect and understanding shown in honouring their country’s national day.

“We are all so thankful for the residents, parish leaders, staff and friends who came along to help us celebrate – it means so much and is a great comfort to us,” said Glenda Namua.

A special thank you to St Agnes’ Food Service for making sweet potato and coconut milk soup, as well as coconut cake, for the morning tea celebration at Emm Home. Also, to the JHI team for their support in organising a lunch event in the Parish Hall.
