Passion drives Kitiara to thrive in an engineering career
An ambassador for women in trades, Kitiara Porter, is graduating in the Cert III in Engineering (Metal Fabrication) after completing her four year apprenticeship with John Henry Institute. Kitiara is currently employed as a Boilermaker and has inspiring ambitions to one day work in mining.
After realising her enjoyment of working with metals at school Kitiara’s passion grew in the workplace where she designs and builds parts for boats and pontoons. “I like the process of planning, designing, welding and seeing the final product”, says Kitiara. At work, Kitiara makes hatch lids and deck sheets for boats and enjoys working as a team with her male colleagues. She says she has always felt respected and has great friendships with males in class and in the workplace.
In the classroom, Kitiara has enjoyed the process of learning theory that goes with the on the job and practical tasks. “The classroom helps everything to make sense, where you can practice skills and learn from each other and the trainer”.
Her advice to other females interested in male dominated trades is to pursue what their heart tells them to do and go for it! She says, “Just do it – don’t hold back. Trades are great fun, a rewarding career and you won’t regret it!”. Kitiara comes from a home where her sisters and Mother are proud of her confidence and her achievement. Kitiara says, “My Mum was surprised by my decision to work with metals but now she is really proud”.
Kitara is truly an inspiring student with a bright future ahead.
